One of the world’s best-known motorcycle marques – the legendary Harley-Davidson – will appear at CRC Speedshow for the very first time in 2012.

As the doors to this year’s CRC Speedshow open at the ASB Showgrounds on Saturday 21 July, Kiwi motorbike fans will have the opportunity to see a special selection of the latest Harley-Davidson models and Harley-Davidson clothing ranges.

For the youths of Highlands Ranch there is no shortage of activity in the 8,200-acre backyard most commonly referred to as the Backcountry Wilderness Area.

From hayrides to nature hikes, day camps, trail rides and a variety of special events such as the upcoming cattle-branding party May 12, the backcountry offers something for everyone, even adults.

But what is new, and exclusive, for kids age 9-13 this summer are the weeklong, full-day Wilderness Adventures camps that the HRCA is partnering up with The Wildlife Experience on. Beginning June 18 and running through Aug. 3 the camps will start off every morning in a different location in the backcountry and then shift to The Wildlife Experience for the afternoon.

“We expect this camp to grow into one of the best outdoor camps in the metro area in the coming years,” said Mark Giebel, backcountry wilderness area supervisor for the HRCA. “The camp will include archery lessons, ecology, animal tracking, survival lessons, hayrides, horseback riding and a lot of great guest speakers.”

Also, Giebel added, with the indoor/outdoor component they are gaining by teaming up with The Wildlife Experience, the kids won’t be stuck outside for the typical, late-summer, afternoon thunderstorms. Instead the kids will be busy being entertained and educated by 3-D movies, scientific experiments, live animal encounters and more at The Wildlife Experience.

The camps, which are open to non-residents as well, are being offered for $265 a week for residents and $345 for non-residents, with the exception of the four-day camp the week of July 4, which is being priced at $219/$285.

In the two weeks leading up to the full-day camps, the backcountry specialists will also offer half-day Wilderness Adventures camps for kids ages 9-13 from June 4-8 and kids ages 7-8 from June 11-15.  Single-day purchase plans are available for the half-day camps only.

A record number of entries have been received for the 2012 Kerikeri International Piano Competition, with musicians set to flock to the Far North from throughout the world for four days from June 28.

Contestants will come from Australia, Malaysia, Poland, Taiwan, China, South Korea and New Zealand to compete in this prestigious event and to vie for some $25,000 in prizemoney.

The musicians now face an intense period of preparation, both mental and physical to reach the required standard. This is not for the faint hearted! All music must be performed from memory, a feat in itself. The selection of repertoire must include a major classical sonata, a 30 minute recital and, for the four finalists, a 45-minute recital.

” The standard of the 43 entries to this year’s competition was outstanding and the level of technical and musical ability was, at times, quite breathtaking,” says event co-ordinator John Jackets.

“As a result, the assessor had an extremely hard time selecting the 16 who would go forward to the competition.

Advanced Micro Devices is cutting costs and reducing the number of its data centers worldwide with the help of the cloud and hardware upgrades, an AMD executive said Thursday.

AMD will reduce the number of data centers it has to three by 2014, of which two will be in North America and one in Asia, said Farid Dana, director of IT services at AMD, in an interview. AMD currently has 12 data centers, down from 18 in mid-2009 when the consolidation effort began.

The company’s goal is to cut costs by shifting more tasks to the cloud, and by opening data centers in locations that have lower power costs and lower taxes, Dana said. AMD is moving away from high-cost-per-watt places like Boston and California and establishing data centers in places like Suwanee, Georgia.

“We’ve gained some tax efficiency from the location,” Dana said. “One of the factors is also disaster recovery. That’s why we have three data centers and not one, and we are geographically dispersed.”

Dana has a list of 40 physical factors to take into account when deciding where to locate a data center, include proximity to transit, weather, water sources and available electricity. Choices have to be made carefully, and something as simple as a nearby rail line could cause vibrations that harm server operations, he said.

But in downsizing, Dana wants to ensure AMD’s engineers have access to the resources needed to design chips. AMD is trying to consolidate servers and reduce expenses such as electric bills through higher utilization rates. The company is also reducing network latency so engineers get quicker access to servers.

AMD is operating a private cloud that makes key EDA (electronic design applications) accessible to engineers worldwide. The company’s engineering tasks are executed in real time across a virtual grid of servers that has 120,000 CPU cores. AMD tries to maintain close to a 100 percent utilization rate, and virtualization tools help all cores seem like one “giant number-crunching machine,” Dana said.

“We want to do compute anywhere — it doesn’t matter where the engineer sits as long as they get the performance they need,” Dana said.

Putting applications in the cloud consolidates computing resources and centralizes the computing infrastructure, Dana said. Data is more secure because it is stored in fewer, centralized locations.

Many companies offer cloud services, such as Amazon, but AMD kept an internal cloud as it wanted to have stronger control over usage of EDA tools. The company has deployed specific tools to track down where resources need to be assigned, and cloud transactions change by region as employees worldwide have been assigned different tasks, Dana said.

“It’s not cost-effective to do it externally,” Dana said.

Over the past few years, closure of data centers has resulted in huge savings, Dana said. The company is retiring old data centers as contracts end and as hardware retires, replacing it with new equipment and hardware, which requires the same level of investment as upgrading existing data centers.
